Once every few days, RestoreX360 automatically connects to the license server to check for available critical updates.

As part of the checking for new updates process, RestoreX360 also checks its license in the license database.

If the computer has Internet connection but failed to connect to the license server, RestoreX360 will display a warning message “RestoreX360 license authentication failed. You may be a victim of software counterfeiting!” on the top right corner of desktop.

This is a warning message, NOT an error.

This warning message will not hinder RestoreX360 normal operations.

This earning message will automatically disappear after next successful license authentication.

To manually remove this warning message:
1. Open a web browser and make sure it can open www.restorex360.com web site.
2. Open Windows command prompt (CMD) and enter the following command line switch:
    ShdCmd.exe /ChkActivate /u administrator /p password

During installation of RestoreX360, you may encounter the error message below

Reason

You may be using drive encryption to protect your data from unauthorized access. A feature of RestoreX360 is that it will encrypt drives and data from unauthorized access. Windows, however, will only allow for one Drive Encryption service to be active. So if you have any drive encryption services active, this will often conflict with the installation of our software, which will often result in the Hard Disk is Encrypted. Setup Cannot Continue” error message.

The most common of these is the Windows proprietary service, BitLocker. BitLocker is included in Windows 7, 8.1, 10 and 11. With Windows 7, it’s only available in the Enterprise Edition; with Windows 8.1 10 and 11. it’s available in every edition but the Home Edition (NOTE on some Windows 11 Home OEM installs, its implemented as “Device Encryption”. It’s also worth noting that all Surface Pro tablets come with BitLocker enabled.

NOTE: If you are unsure if you are using BitLocker, you can check Disk Management to determine if it’s active.

The process for disabling BitLocker for each OS varies slightly.

Windows 11 and 10

Click the Windows (Start) button and Type in “Manage BitLocker” or “Encryption” . Click on the Control Panel result

On the next screen, click “Turn off BitLocker”

It is important with Windows 10 and 11 to follow these steps as BitlLocker may appear off, but it is in fact partially active.
Fully activating and fully disabling will remove BitLocker entirely.

Windows 7

1) Open Control Panel; select System and Security.
2) Select BitLocker Drive Encryption.
4) Select Turn off BitLocker
5) A prompt will appear, choose Decrypt Drive to confirm.

Windows 8.x

1) Open Control Panel; select System and Security.
2) Select BitLocker Drive Encryption.
3) You will need to unlock your C: drive and any other drives you wish to cover with the software. Select Unlock drive and enter the password and select Unlock.
4) An option should then become available to Turn off BitLocker, select that.
5) A prompt will appear, once again choose to Turn off BitLocker to confirm.

For 3rd party Drive Encryption services, please consult with the software’s developers and their User Guides when applicable for disabling or uninstalling.

How much disk space do I need to setup RestoreX360?

RestoreX360 protects PC system and data in real time without creating duplicate copies, it doesn’t take or reserve a lot of disk space to setup. The setup only takes about 0.1% of hard disk space to create the installation snapshot and the snapshot database.

For example:

1. You have a  PC with a 100GB hard drive with 50GB data and 50GB free space.

2. RestoreX360 setup would take about 100MB disk space (100000MB*0.1%=100MB).

3. After setup RestoreX360, you would have about 49.90GB free space.
 

How much disk space do I need to take a new snapshot?

RestoreX360 does not take any disk space for taking a snapshot. The space taken by a new snapshot, the snapshot size shown on the snapshot properties, is the amount of data that’s been added (changed) since last snapshot.

For example:

1. You have a  PC with a 100GB hard drive with 50GB data and 50GB free space.
2. You install RestoreX360 on the PC. The setup creates the Installation snapshot. You have about 50GB free space (see the example above).

3. You then install Microsoft Office 2010 which takes 1GB. You now have 49B free space.

3. You take a new snapshot called Office2010. After creating the snapshot Office2010, the free space is still 49GB. (Note RestoreX360 didn’t take any additional disk space for creating snapshot Office2010. The size of the snapshot Office2010 is 1GB, used by Microsoft Office 2010 files.)
 

How can I delete files and free disk space from snapshots?

To free disk space from deleting files, you must meet one condition: THE FILES DELETED ARE NOT IN ANY OTHER SNAPSHOTS. The general rule of thumb is: If a file is no-where to be found in any snapshots – it shouldn’t exist on the hard disk, then it shouldn’t take up any disk space.

But if the file is found in any snapshot – it is on the hard disk, then it takes up disk space.

For example

1. You have a  PC with a 100GB hard drive with 50GB data and 50GB free space.
2. You install RestoreX360 on the PC. The setup creates the Installation snapshot. You have about 50GB free space after setup(see the example above).

3. You then install Microsoft Office 2010 which takes 1GB. You now have 49GB free space.

4. You take a new snapshot called Office2010. You still have 49GB free space.

5. You uninstall Office 2010 and remove all its files. But the free space still shows 49GB, because the MS office files are locked in the Snapshot Office2010. If you rollback the PC to the snapshot Office2010, the Office 2010 will be there; therefore, office 2010 files are still on the hard drive and taking up disk space.

6. You then take a snapshot called No-office. The space taken by this snapshot is almost nothing, because no data has been added since the Snapshot Office2010. You have 49GB free space.

7. You delete the snapshot Office2010. At this point, we only have Installation snapshot which does not have the MS Office 2010 and the No-office snapshot which does not have Office 2010 neither. So the 1GB space used by Office 2010 should be recycled.

8. Run Snapshot Defragmenter in RestoreX360. The free space should be 50GB.
 

I deleted a snapshot and run Snapshot Defragmenter but the free space remains unchanged, what’s wrong?

It’s because the snapshot you just deleted has children snapshots which inherited the data.

For example

1. You have a  PC with a 100GB hard drive with 50GB data and 50GB free space.
2. You install RestoreX360 on the PC. The setup creates the Installation snapshot. You have about 50GB free space after setup (see the example above).

3. You then install Microsoft Office 2010, it takes up 1GB disk space. You now have 49GB free space.

4. You take a new snapshot called Office2010. You still have 49GB free space.

5. You then take a new snapshot called Office2010-Child (the Office2010-Child snapshot is a child snapshot of Office2010). There is no data added to the PC since the snapshot Office2010, so the size of the Office2010-Child is almost nothing. You still have 49GB free space.

6. You delete the snapshot Office2010 and run Snapshot Defragmenter, but the free space is still at 49GB, no free space gained from deleting the snapshot. This is because the snapshot Office2010-Child, as the child snapshot of the Office-snapshot, has Office 2010 files, the space taken by Office 2010 cannot be freed (remember the rule of thumb!).

This is how RestoreX360 license activation works:

1. When you order RestoreX360, you’ll receive a Licensed Product ID which can be used to activate the number of PCs (licenses).

2. When you install RestoreX360 on a computer, RestoreX360 generates an Activation ID (machine ID). The Activation ID is associated with the PC’s hard disk serial number and it remains unchanged even if you format the system and reinstall Windows and RestoreX360.

3. When you activate RestoreX360, the Licensed Product ID and Activation ID are sent to the RestoreX360 license server. Based on the two IDs provided, the license server will generate and return an Activation Code..

 If the Product ID does not exist in the license server (not a Licensed Product ID), the license server will return the message of “You have supplied an invalid product ID”. If the Licensed Product ID is authorized for 2 PCs and you already have 2 activation records (2 unique machine IDs in the license server database), the license server will return the message of “You have exceeded the maximum activation allowed” .

So you can see if you format the system and re-install RestoreX360, the Product ID will not change, the activation ID will not change, therefore the activation code will not change. You should have no problem to repeatedly install and activation RestoreX360 on the same PC. But if the hard disk changes reinstalling RestoreX360 on a new PC or changing a hard drive “the Activation Code (for the old hard disk) won’t work on the new one. We would need to release the Activation Code associated with the old hard disk, so you can activate the software on the new hard disk.

But we do not recommend you to defrag the drives protected by RestoreX360 because It will not deliver the results you expect.

RestoreX360 snapshots are transparent to Windows defragmenter, the defragmenter cannot read or alter data in RestoreX360 snapshots. So the defragmenter can only defrag the data in the current system, it will not be able to defrag data in snapshots.

This is what we recommend:

1. Defrag the disks before installing RestoreX360, so you have a nice and clean system.

2. RestoreX360 has a build-in snapshot defragmenter, you should use it to defrag the system. It’s fast and it works with RestoreX360 snapshots.

3. If you want to defrag the drives with a third party defragmenter. Turn off RestoreX360 protection, defrag the drives and then turn on the protection.

A snapshot is a table of sectors being used at the time of the snapshot, its not a backup of files on the hard disk. RestoreX360 snapshots reside on the local hard drive. If the hard drive has physical problems, all snapshots are no longer accessible. 

If you have important data that you cannot afford to lose, back it up in multiple places including offsite storage is still a MUST to ensure the availability of your data in the worst scenario.

All computer backup and restore solutions by theory work in a timeline fashion. For example, you create backup A at 1:00PM, you create backup B at 2:00PM.
