Article ID: 98

Unlike conventional backup and restore software, RestoreX360 protects PC system and data without creating duplicate copies. It’s a pioneer concept, but it’s often a very confusing concept for many users who are custom to the conventional backup/restore products.

The following questions and answers explain the fundamental concept of how RestoreX360 uses disk space.

How much disk space do I need to setup RestoreX360?

RestoreX360 protects PC system and data in real time without creating duplicate copies, it doesn’t take or reserve a lot of disk space to setup. The setup only takes about 0.1% of hard disk space to create the installation snapshot and the snapshot database.

For example:

1. You have a PC with a 100GB hard drive with 50GB data and 50GB free space.

2. RestoreX360 setup would take about 100MB disk space (100000MB*0.1%=100MB).

3. After setup RestoreX360, you would have about 49.90GB free space.

How much disk space do I need to take a new snapshot?

RestoreX360 does not take any disk space for taking a snapshot. The space taken by a new snapshot, the snapshot size shown on the snapshot properties, is the amount of data that’s been added (changed) since last snapshot.

For example:

1. You have a PC with a 100GB hard drive with 50GB data and 50GB free space.
2. You install RestoreX360 on the PC. The setup creates the Installation snapshot. You have about 50GB free space (see the example above).

3. You then install Microsoft Office 2010 which takes 1GB. You now have 49B free space.

3. You take a new snapshot called Office2010. After creating the snapshot Office2010, the free space is still 49GB. (Note RestoreX360 didn’t take any additional disk space for creating snapshot Office2010. The size of the snapshot Office2010 is 1GB, used by Microsoft Office 2010 files.)

How can I delete files and free disk space from snapshots?

To free disk space from deleting files, you must meet one condition: THE FILES DELETED ARE NOT IN ANY OTHER SNAPSHOTS. The general rule of thumb is: If a file is no-where to be found in any snapshots – it shouldn’t exist on the hard disk, then it shouldn’t take up any disk space.

But if the file is found in any snapshot – it is on the hard disk, then it takes up disk space.

For example

1. You have a PC with a 100GB hard drive with 50GB data and 50GB free space.
2. You install RestoreX360 on the PC. The setup creates the Installation snapshot. You have about 50GB free space after setup(see the example above).

3. You then install Microsoft Office 2010 which takes 1GB. You now have 49GB free space.

4. You take a new snapshot called Office2010. You still have 49GB free space.

5. You uninstall Office 2010 and remove all its files. But the free space still shows 49GB, because the MS office files are locked in the Snapshot Office2010. If you rollback the PC to the snapshot Office2010, the Office 2010 will be there; therefore, office 2010 files are still on the hard drive and taking up disk space.

6. You then take a snapshot called No-office. The space taken by this snapshot is almost nothing, because no data has been added since the Snapshot Office2010. You have 49GB free space.

7. You delete the snapshot Office2010. At this point, we only have Installation snapshot which does not have the MS Office 2010 and the No-office snapshot which does not have Office 2010 neither. So the 1GB space used by Office 2010 should be recycled.

8. Run Snapshot Defragmenter in RestoreX360. The free space should be 50GB.

I deleted a snapshot and run Snapshot Defragmenter but the free space remains unchanged, what’s wrong?

It’s because the snapshot you just deleted has children snapshots which inherited the data.

For example

1. You have a PC with a 100GB hard drive with 50GB data and 50GB free space.
2. You install RestoreX360 on the PC. The setup creates the Installation snapshot. You have about 50GB free space after setup (see the example above).

3. You then install Microsoft Office 2010, it takes up 1GB disk space. You now have 49GB free space.

4. You take a new snapshot called Office2010. You still have 49GB free space.

5. You then take a new snapshot called Office2010-Child (the Office2010-Child snapshot is a child snapshot of Office2010). There is no data added to the PC since the snapshot Office2010, so the size of the Office2010-Child is almost nothing. You still have 49GB free space.

6. You delete the snapshot Office2010 and run Snapshot Defragmenter, but the free space is still at 49GB, no free space gained from deleting the snapshot. This is because the snapshot Office2010-Child, as the child snapshot of the Office-snapshot, has Office 2010 files, the space taken by Office 2010 cannot be freed (remember the rule of thumb!).

This is how RestoreX360 license activation works:

1. When you order RestoreX360, you’ll receive a Licensed Product ID which can be used to activate the number of PCs (licenses).

2. When you install RestoreX360 on a computer, RestoreX360 generates an Activation ID (machine ID). The Activation ID is associated with the PC’s hard disk serial number and it remains unchanged even if you format the system and reinstall Windows and RestoreX360.

3. When you activate RestoreX360, the Licensed Product ID and Activation ID are sent to the RestoreX360 license server. Based on the two IDs provided, the license server will generate and return an Activation Code..

If the Product ID does not exist in the license server (not a Licensed Product ID), the license server will return the message of “You have supplied an invalid product ID”. If the Licensed Product ID is authorized for 2 PCs and you already have 2 activation records (2 unique machine IDs in the license server database), the license server will return the message of “You have exceeded the maximum activation allowed” .

So you can see if you format the system and re-install RestoreX360, the Product ID will not change, the activation ID will not change, therefore the activation code will not change. You should have no problem to repeatedly install and activation RestoreX360 on the same PC. But if the hard disk changes reinstalling RestoreX360 on a new PC or changing a hard drive “the Activation Code (for the old hard disk) won’t work on the new one. We would need to release the Activation Code associated with the old hard disk, so you can activate the software on the new hard disk.

To request a transfer of RestoreX360 license to a new computer (hard disk), please send your licensed Product ID and inquiry to support@restorex360.com.

Yes you can.

But we do not recommend you to defrag the drives protected by RestoreX360 because It will not deliver the results you expect.

RestoreX360 snapshots are transparent to Windows defragmenter, the defragmenter cannot read or alter data in RestoreX360 snapshots. So the defragmenter can only defrag the data in the current system, it will not be able to defrag data in snapshots.

This is what we recommend:

1. Defrag the disks before installing RestoreX360, so you have a nice and clean system.

2. RestoreX360 has a build-in snapshot defragmenter, you should use it to defrag the system. It’s fast and it works with RestoreX360 snapshots.

3. If you want to defrag the drives with a third party defragmenter. Turn off RestoreX360 protection, defrag the drives and then turn on the protection.

No. RestoreX360 is not a backup software, its not intended to be the replacement of your data backup solution. RestoreX360 allows you to instantly undo PC problems by rolling back the PC to snapshots.

A snapshot is a table of sectors being used at the time of the snapshot, its not a backup of files on the hard disk. RestoreX360 snapshots reside on the local hard drive. If the hard drive has physical problems, all snapshots are no longer accessible.

If you have important data that you cannot afford to lose, back it up in multiple places including offsite storage is still a MUST to ensure the availability of your data in the worst scenario.

Topic: What do you mean RestoreX360 can restore data up to the minute of system crash?

All computer backup and restore solutions by theory work in a timeline fashion. For example, you create backup A at 1:00PM, you create backup B at 2:00PM. If your PC crashes at 1:40PM, you risk losing 40 minutes worth of data by restoring the PC from backup A. The only way to minimize the risk is to reduce the backup interval. You can backup your PC in every 10 minutes, but in which case you still risk losing up to 10 minutes worth of data in an event of system crash. Theoretically there is always a between your last backup and next backup, no matter how small the gap is.

RestoreX360 uniquely design provides you the ability to possibility eliminate this restoring data up to the minute of system crash.

Let a use an example to see how we can do this with RestoreX360.

Situation:

You setup RestoreX360 to take daily snapshots at 10:00AM.

It’s 3:00AM in the afternoon. Your PC crashed with a Windows Blue Screen of Death.

You have been working on a word document, report.doc.

You know you can restore the PC from the snapshot taken by RestoreX360 at 10:00AM. But doing so you will lose the work that you have done on the report.doc. since 10:00AM.

How can you recover the PC to a working condition and restore the most current version report.doc from 3:00PM right before the system crash?

Solution:

Restart the PC. Press the HOME key to access RestoreX360 pre-OS Recovery Console.

Select a New snapshot’s from in the pre-OS Recovery Console and name the new snapshot Crash PC. The snapshot Crash PC contains everything on the hard drive including the sales.doc from 3:00PM right before the crash (The unique design of RestoreX360 allows you to take a snapshot of a PC even if Windows OS fails to load).

Select a Rollback computer and pick the snapshot taken at 10:00AM.

After you boot into Windows, open RestoreX360, select the snapshot “Crash PC taken in the step 2 and browse it as virtual drives. Now you can find the report.doc in the virtual drive and restore it.

Result:

You have successfully recovered the crash PC to working condition from the snapshot taken at 10:00AM and restored the latest copy of report.doc right before the system was crashed at 3:00PM.

Disk space: very little. RestoreX360 setup takes 0.1% of hard disk space to create the snapshot database. Each additional snapshot takes no additional disk space other than the actual data added (changed) since last snapshot.

Memory: less than 10MB for all processes and executable when they are running.

CPU usage: Constantly 0%. But it might spike up for a couple of seconds when you are defragging the snapshots.

Article ID: 80

Every company likes to think its product is the best in the world. The only way you, as a consumer, can know for sure is to put the product next to its competitors and see how it stacks up. But to have a fair and conclusive comparison, you need to make sure you compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. How can we have a conclusive comparison?

We need to compare products under their common specifications. The common specifications that define RestoreX360 type products are:

Strength

What can it protect? What can it restore? How strong is the protection?

Space

How much resource does it require?

Speed

How fast can it work? How fast can I restore my system?

Simplicity

How easy is it to use the software? How easy is it to restore my troubled PC?

Now we will put some products under this comparison scope and see how it compares with RestoreX360:

Example 1:

RestoreX360 vs. Windows System Restore (WSR)

Strength

1.a WSR only protects Windows systems file and registry.

1.b RestoreX360 protects everything on the hard drive including system files, registry, data files, programs and settings.

2.a WSR only works when Windows works. If windows has crashed, you cannot get to WSR.

2.b RestoreX360 works with and without Windows. You can still restore when Windows has crashed.

Space

1.a WSR create backups of system files. It requires 10-20% of disk space.

1.b RestoreX360 does not create backups. It only takes very little disk space.

Speed

1.a WSR takes minutes or many minutes to restore a safe point.

1.b RestoreX360 takes seconds to restore a snapshot.

Simplicity

Both programs are very simple to operate.

Example 2:

RestoreX360 vs. Norton Ghost

Strength

1.a Norton Ghost images includes everything on the hard drive including system files, data files, programs and settings.

1.b RestoreX360 protects everything on the drive including system files, data, programs and settings.

2.a Norton Ghost restores everything on the hard drive to the time the drive was imaged.

2.b RestoreX360 restores everything on the hard drive to the time when it was snapshoted.

Space

1.a Norton Ghost requires disk space equivalent to 50%-100% of system size.

1.b RestoreX360 does not backup files. It only takes very little drive space.

Speed

1.a Norton Ghost takes many many minutes (30+) to create a backup image and restore an image.

1.b RestoreX360 takes a few seconds to take a snapshot and few seconds to restore a snapshot.

Simplicity

1.a You can restore RestoreX360 snapshots with a single click without third party media.

1.b You need bootable CD or other third party media to restore a Ghost image, which requires many steps.

Now you got the picture. If you have another product, you just simply put it through the comparison scope, the choice is then clear.
